Short & clear: Dogs have tears – but usually not as "emotional crying" like in movies.

Tears in dogs are primarily a technical function: They keep the eye clean, moist, and protected.

What tears are for in dogs

  • Protection & care for the eye (like "windshield washer fluid")
  • Rinsing & removal of dust/dirt
  • Reaction to irritants such as wind, cold, or dry air

Why a dog might have watery eyes

Common, rather "trivial" reasons:

  • Wind, dust, pollen
  • Fur/hair in the eye (or irritating eyelashes)
  • Irritation from dry air/heated air
  • Mild inflammation or small foreign objects

When you should get it checked

  • If your buddy constantly has watery eyes or if you see this:
  • Mucus / yellowish-green discharge
  • Redness, squinting, pawing at the eye
  • Severe itching, light sensitivity
  • Suddenly unilateral and significantly more than usual

👉 Then it applies: better to have it checked by a vet than to smile it away.
