How much fat suits your Buddy?

5 % crude fat sounds better than 30 %? Not necessarily.

Fat is an important part of a dog's diet – a source of energy, a supplier of essential fatty acids and important for absorbing fat-soluble vitamins. What matters is energy needs, activity, the main food and the total amount of snacks over the day.

A rough guide to our range:

• Under 10 % crude fat: Salmon Skin Sticks, Horse Strips, Fish Mini, Goat Tripe, Lamb Lung, Duck Necks. Worth a look if your Buddy gets lots of training rewards or you're keeping an eye on fat.
• 10 to under 20 % crude fat: Roe Deer Skin with Fur, Horse Maxi, Lamb Lung Mini, Goat Lung. Mid range.
• 20 % crude fat and above: Most Soft cubes, Mini cubes, Ministicks, Duck Strips, Lamb Tripe and other chews. Higher in fat – not automatically worse, but keep an eye on the amount.

WSAVA recommends that for healthy dogs, treats and rewards together make up no more than about 10 % of daily calorie intake. Keep in mind: crude fat is not the same as calories. The crude fat value helps you compare – for exact energy density we would also need the calorie content.

That's why we deliberately don't call a snack with little crude fat "low-calorie".

What if my dog needs a low-fat diet?

If your Buddy needs a low-fat diet because of a medical condition, a snack's crude fat percentage alone isn't enough to judge whether it's suitable. Please agree on the right feeding plan with your vet.
